Getting You Where You Want to Go Since 1965

1965 was a vintage year for the emergence of some great American icons.  The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews debuted to enormous audiences and quickly rose to become one of the most beloved movies of all time as well as a box office hit.  The Righteous Brothers hit the top of the charts with a song called “You Lost That Loving Feeling.”  The Ford Mustang had been introduced in the previous year, but 1965 was the year the cat aficionados still call “the Year of the Mustang.”

Another enduring icon made its entrance in 1965.  On May 16th that year, a new gasoline brand called CITGO was announced with no small amount of fanfare by then parent company, Cities Service Company.  The airwaves were full of the new “Zoom! Zoom! Cities Service is CITGO Now” campaign and point of purchase material at the newly re-branded gas stations everywhere proclaimed that CITGO was “A Nice Place to Visit.”  Forty years later, our brand message is virtually the same as we work every day to help you get where you want to go for the road ahead.

CITGO’S Contribution to History

CITGO was officially born in the spring of 1983, but the company traces its heritage back to the early 1900s and a pioneer oilman named Henry L. Doherty.

A century goes by fast when you’re having fun.  Or, as in CITGO’s case, when you are going from a small town oil and gas company into a global presence.  Known as the Cities Service Company in the early 1900s, the company was recognized for its hard work and successful projects.  In 1931, the company completed the country’s first long distance, high-pressure natural gas transportation system.  The famous “Big Inch” project was a 24-inch pipeline stretched 1,000 miles from Amarillo, Texas to Chicago.

From the “Big Inch,” Cities Service Company went the extra mile and soon developed into a fully diversified oil and gas company with operations worldwide.  The company’s familiar green and white logo was recognizable to motorists everywhere.

The CITGO Years

In 1965, Cities Service Company changed its marketing brand to CITGO.  The well-known green and white logo evolved into the CITGO “Trimark”  logo of today, a symbol of continuing innovation and quality.  In the 1990s, CITGO was purchased by Petrolesos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVS)  the national petroleum company of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.  CITGO is based in Houston, Texas, and continues to be a leading refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals, refined waxes, asphalt, and other industrial products. Servicing cities to serving the world, all in less than 100 years.
